Jack White is the most fascinating man. I’ve seen him live in Detroit at the fillmore. He is radiant.  I almost died.

This is a video of The White Stripes from the “Elephant” days that takes place at the Grammy’s. This video remains one of my favorite videos of a live set by The White Stripes. First, Seven Nation Army is probably their most recognizable song. Death Letter on the other hand is not so well known (but one of my personal favorites). I’ve probably over analyzed this performance, and I’m sure no one cares but this is what I think. Jack is probably a pretty confident fellow and felt like he had it under control, but who the fuck wouldn’t be nervous, right? This is the Grammy’s guys, they’re only up there for a couple of minutes. The words “don’t fuck up, don’t fuck up, don’t fuck up” would be the only thing on my mind. Jack does fuck up at 0:30, just sayin’. This isn’t a bad thing though, and the only reason I mention it is because I’ve seen lots of White Stripes live clips and Jack tends to never fuck up, and if he does he saves it pretty nicely like in the video above. Now let’s talk about Meg. Meg is amazing, and I don’t care what anyone says, that is all.

They cut Seven Nation Army short and go straight into Death Letter with the lights changing from white to red the second they switch. From here on out you know, you can tell almost immediately that something has changed. There’s a sense of confidence from the both of them, especially from Jack. Why is this? Jack has said that he’s always felt more comfortable playing covers more than his own songs. Death Letter is a cover of Son House’s “Death Letter Blues”, but is also very different, It’s more of a rendition. When they switch the crowd switches with them. They are all like “Wtf is going on?” “What’s happening?”. They’re into it, they cheer, they put their fists into the air and they fucking love it. It carries on a few verses into the song then they go full force, they speed up, and Jack is moving around fiercely. This is what’s awesome. Jack is feeling what most people who play like this describe as releasing a fucking demon, something inside of you snaps and you get so into what you’re doing it wouldn’t matter if the audience was there or not. They feel it, and it’s powerful.

Anyways, every time I watch this video it gives me the chills, and I can’t help but re-watch it over and over. Plus, in some versions (not this one unfortunately) at the end you can see Quentin Tarantino clapping fiercely with the biggest smile on his face clearly thinking “Fuck yes!”, which counts for a lot.

The White Stripes are great. I’m a bit sad that they called it quits but that’s okay, they’ve had a good run. They want to preserve what they have, and what they have never gets old for me. Jack will continue making bands and producing bands and Meg…well I’m not sure what the hell she’s doing but the best of luck to her.

I’ll try and post more videos and photos in the future. Peace!
